To Be A True Believer

What does it mean to be a Christian?
That’s a deeply personal—and important—question.
Sometimes I feel more confident explaining what a Christian is not than explaining what it truly means to be one.
When I look at the very public expressions of Christianity in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere—where hate and the love of riches and power overshadows forgiveness, compassion, and love of neighbor—I struggle to see any true following of the teachings of our Lord and Savior.
So, what does true Christianity look like?
"Do unto others as you would have them do to you."
The simple answer, I think, is to follow the teachings of our Lord and Savior—to read Scripture, grow with it, and try to live what we learn.
And yet, even that can feel complicated. Interpretation varies, and I’m left asking: where does God’s voice end and my own desires begin? How much of what I believe is God’s true message, and how much is something I’ve shaped to fit a “self-god” of my own making?
So where do we go from here?
“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them” (Matthew 18:20).
